The Five Love Languages of Children

By Gary Chapman, PhD, and Ross Campbell, MD

About the Book:

To be their best, children need to feel loved. But if you and your child speak different love languages, your affection might get lost in translation, affecting the child’s attitude, behavior, and development. Dr. Gary Chapman’s groundbreaking Five Love Languages series has helped millions of couples communicate love more clearly, and Dr. Ross Campbell M.D. has applied the innovative system to children as well. The 5 Love Languages of Children gives practical suggestions for learning how your children interpret love and creating a sense of security in which they can thrive.

Brenda Says:

Raising children is a difficult job.  But when you can speak to their individual love language, it just makes the job a little bit easier.  Knowing and recognizing the way they give and receive love can help you to understand your child.  It will help you to fortify and grow your personal relationship with them.

I really enjoyed this book and learning which love language my own son understands best.  His language is that of affirmation.  This means that he likes for others to use words to tell  him that he is special and he does a good job.  I kind of guessed this already, but it is nice to know I am speaking his language.

The other love languages are the following:

Physical Touch–These people like to receive hugs, kisses, and high fives.

Gifts–These people feel good when someone gives them a special present or surprise.

Acts of Service–These people like it when others do nice things for them such as helping with chores, helping with school projects, or driving them places.

Quality Time–These people like it when others do things with them like watch a movie, go out to eat, or play a game.

Here is a little game that is included in the book to help your child determine their love language.  Just have them choose the letter of the comment they like best and wish that their mom or dad would say to them.  (There are no wrong answers.)  When they are done, have them count how many A’s, B’s, C’s, D’s, and E’s that they chose.  Then reference the chart at the end to discover their love language!

1.  A–Give me a hug!

B–You are terrific!

2.  C–I’ve got a special birthday present for you!

D–I’ll help you with your project.

3.  E–Let’s go to a movie.

A–Give me a high five!

4.  B–You are so smart!

C–Have you made your Christmas list?

5.  D–Would you help me cook dinner?

E–I like going to fun places with you!

6.  A–Give me a kiss!

B–You are #1!

7.  C–I’ve got a surprise for you.

D–We can make something really cool.

8.  E–Let’s Watch TV together!

A–Tag, you’re it!

9.  B–You did a great job!

C–You’ve earned a special surprise!

10. D–You can invite your friends.

E–Let’s go to your favorite restaurant.

11.  A–I’m going to give you a big hug!

B–You are an awesome kid!

12. C–I made your favorite food.

D–I checked your homework, and it looks great!

13. E–You are fun to hang out with!

A–I’ll race you!

14. B–Wow!  You did it!

C–Check under your bed for a special present!

15.  D–I cleaned up your room for you.

E–Let’s play a game together.

16.  A–Would you like for me to scratch your back?

B–You can do it!  Don’t give up!

17.  C–What would you like for your birthday?

D–We can pick up your friend on the way to the movie.

18.  E–I always like doing stuff with you.

A–You are so huggable!

19.  B–How did you know how to do that?  You are brilliant!

C–I can’t wait to give you your present!

20.  D–Don’t worry!  I’ll pick you up on time!

E.  Let’s spend the day doing whatever you want to do!

Count up how many of each letter you have and find which one you have the most.  Then look below for which love language you speak:

A’s–A’s stand for physical touch.

B’s–B’s stand for words of affirmation.

C’s–C’s stand for gifts.

D’s–D’s stand for acts of service.

E’s–E’s stand for quality time.

Now before you think you don’t need the book, you do!  The book covers each love language in depth to help you understand it and how to relate to the language your child speaks.

Brenda Says:

This was a very difficult review to do.  I have been avoiding it, but I just need to say what I think.

When I was originally asked about reviewing this book, I didn’t know much about it.  The title held a lot of promise and I thought it would be a wonderful book to read and implement in my life.  We have all been there when we just want to ask God, “Now What???”  I thought this would be a book about faith and discovering how to accept and find God’s plan for your life.  I couldn’t have been more wrong.

This book is New Age philosophy with a little bit of scripture thrown in.  It is literally the philosophies of men mingled with scripture.  In our home, we refer to this as Rameumpton.  In fact, when I handed the book to my husband, he read a little of it and then proclaimed it to be exactly that. To say that the mutterings and chants that the book says you need to do made me uncomfortable would be an understatement.

I cannot in good conscience recommend this book.  I would recommend that you step away from it and turn to the actual word of God found in His scriptures.  Jesus tells us that He is the Way, the truth and the Life, and that no man can come unto the Father but by and through Him.  That is the only way.  Books that are the philosophies of men, mingled with scripture are NOT the way.
