The Homeschool Mother’s Journal-February 12/12

In my life this week…

I actually began to feel better this week.  I accomplished several things and that is super progress.

I went to a Mary Kay party and had fun being a girly-girl.  I’ve actually worn makeup everyday since that day.  That is kind of a change for sure.  I kind of got out of the habit of wearing makeup when I first lost my vision.  That is a story for another day, but suffice it to say that I have been only wearing makeup on the rare occasion for a few years.

In our homeschool this week…

Chandler did a great job on his schoolwork this week.  He seems to really be enjoying history at the moment.  He also finished reading The Three Musketeers.  He really enjoyed that book as well.

Things I’m working on…

I sent over my ideas for my blog redesign to the my designer this week.  I am excited to see what she does with it.  It will be fun to find out.

I also started a new course this week to help me develop some of my business ideas.  I really think that this course will fill in my blank spots and make things go more smoothly for me.

I’m cooking…

I actually followed the menu plan this week.  Go me!  We had really good meals and I was able to surprise my dad with some cinnamon rolls this week.

This next week is Valentine’s Day.  We always have a special family dinner.  But my husband will be gone that night this year for the first time since we have been married.  He has a business trip that he has to do.  So we are going to have our special dinner the night before.  He will be here that day, and just needing to leave the morning of Valentine’s Day.

The Homeschool Mother’s Journal-February 5, 2012

It’s been practically forever since I did one of these, so it is time to get my act together.  A lot of things have happened since the beginning of November.  I quit a job and started a new one.  Crazy stuff to be sure!

In my life this week…

I’ve been battling some health issues lately.  I have lupus and I have been in a constant flare up for several months.  It has been draining and the stress of my old job is what brought it on and now I can hopefully get it back under control once again.  I have high hopes anyway.

We took a trip to the big city and I spent some time in the herb shop I like to visit.  I found someone very knowledgeable who was able to give me some really great advice for some of my issues.  She really understood my problems and advised me accordingly.  We really felt some hope for the first time in awhile that I can get well again.  I have been avoiding the meds that the conventional doctor would like me to be on.  I am very leery of the side affects and I really feel a strong prompting from the Lord to NOT take that medication.  So I am trusting Him to help me learn what I need to do instead to get well.  He has never led me astray, so I feel my faith is well placed in His hands.

In our homeschool this week…

Chandler has been working really hard on all of his schoolwork.  He is doing well and is currently enjoying literature.  He is reading The Three Musketeers.  He says it is his new favorite book, and the best thing he has read to date.  That is high praise, since he still says that Mark Twain is his favorite author.

He did get caught earlier this week slacking off a bit.  He ended up having to complete his school work for the day at around 7:00 pm.  It has been a really long time since he has done school work that late.  He didn’t enjoy it much.  I think it will be a long time before he repeats that one, if ever.  I’m mean that way.  ;)

He did some deep and indepth study this week on World War I.  He has studied it before, but he said that he learned some things this time that he didn’t know before.  He really enjoyed covering it again.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

Really listen to your kids about how they are feeling about school.  Chandler and I had a long talk this week about what he wants to do for literature this next year. I thought we would be doing the Lord of the Rings curriculum.  But Chandler is really enjoying what we are currently using.  So after a long talk and weighing the pros and cons, we are going to just stick to what he is enjoying.  I own all of the other levels of this curriculum anyway.  So it will save us some money as well as make him super happy.  I think he feels empowered to help make some of the choices and have a say in his own education.  That is important.

I am inspired by…

Neal A. Maxwell.  I shared a quote of his on my Facebook page this week and I want to share it here as well.  It is an important one for me to remember.

Things I’m working on…

I have several things I am working on at the moment.  I am working on finishing up my first ebook and then preparing it for the Kindle.  I am excited about that.  I will also be editing one that my husband is completing on Seed Starting.  He has a degree in horticulture and is very knowledgeable and experienced in gardening and everything in that industry.  It is kind of fun to be his publisher.

I will be having this blog redone in design by a professional.  I am excited to be able to do this.  I am tossing a few ideas around, but am open to suggestions.  I want something that truly represents ME.

I’m cooking…

Not a lot at the moment.  I didn’t even really follow my menu too closely this past week.  However, I am determined to be better about that this coming week.  I know I need to eat better to get healthy and it will help me lose a few unwanted pounds.  So this next week will be different.  I am determined.  And I need to cook so I can take pictures and share more recipes on my blog.  I have that as a goal for this year.  :)

I’m grateful for…

My family and my friends.  They have been such a blessing to me as I have been going through so many changes in my life.  I love them all and I am grateful that Heavenly Father placed them all in my life.

Report Card Time!

In my life this week…

It’s been a few weeks since I have done one of these.  I just keep forgetting to check in and report.  But this week we got our first report card for high school.  And it was a doozy….

In our homeschool this week…

We ended our first quarter of high school and I printed out a report card.  Chandler asked if I could not only print out the letter grade, but the percentages as well.  He wanted to know where he truly was in each subject.  Once he got his report card, he proceeded to question each and every grade.  He wanted to know why he got the percentage he did in each subject.  It really cracked me up, since his lowest grade was an A-.

Here is a rundown of Chandler’s report card:

American Government                                           A

American History I                                                 A+

Composition                                                             A+

High School Grammar                                           A+

Introduction to Literature                                     A

Algebra I                                                                    A

Integrated Physics & Chemistry                           A-

Art                                                                               A

Latin I                                                                         A

PE                                                                                A+

Chandler was really pleased with his report card.  I told him he needs to be proud of his hard work, because he has worked really hard for those grades.  It has been really important to him to get A’s in each subject.  I am glad he is taking his education so seriously.

The only grade I didn’t list on his report card was his Seminary grade.  That comes from his Seminary teacher.  I got a letter in the mail this week and he got an A+ for that subject.  I talked about that letter in my gratitude post on Saturday.

I am inspired by…

My son’s passion for learning.  He is always trying to learn more and do better.  I can learn a lot from him about learning and striving for doing your best.

My favorite thing this week was…

Getting the letter in the mail from Chandler’s Seminary teacher.  It was just one of those moments that you are thrilled to be the parent of your child.

Things I’m working on…

I am trying to do NanoWrimo again this year.  I really want to win this year.  I am having a really great time writing my story and it has proven to be a great stress relief.  I am glad I am working to fit it in this year.

I’m grateful for…

My Gratitude Challenge that I am hosting again this year.  It is really a lift to my spirits to concentrate on those things that I am thankful for.  I am loving looking for all my many blessings.  It is better to concentrate on those blessings instead of thinking of all I don’t have and think I need.  The Lord knows best.  This challenge strengthens my faith in Him.

I also think it is a great way to prepare for the season of Giving.  By concentrating on our blessings, we are more spiritually prepared to give during the Christmas season.
