2010 Gratitude Challenge-November 5

Today I am thankful for my scriptures.  We have been reading the scriptures every day this year together as a family.  We started on January 1st and haven’t missed a day.  Sometimes it has taken some creativity to accomplish this as my husband travels for his job quite often.  We have discovered that it works really well to read them together over the phone.  We put him on speakerphone and we each take turns reading the verses out loud.

Since we do this before bed each day, we are sometimes pretty tired.  But we still accomplish our reading.  I think it helps us to sleep better after reading God’s word.  It is kind of like wrapping ourselves up in His love each night.  A blanket of protection.  A blanket of peace.

I am so grateful that God loved us enough to make it possible for us to have His word at our fingertips.  I love the comfort and peace they bring to me in a world that is filled with conflict.  For just a brief period of time, their words provide me with a respite from my troubles and remind me of the love that God has for me.  They offer me advice.  They offer truth.

I know lots of people who don’t take the time to read the words that God has provided for His children.  I find that sad.  Bibles shouldn’t be bookends and gather dust.  They are meant to be explored and searched for the treasures that lie within their pages.  We are accountable for knowing His word.  It is up to us to ask Him to help us to understand them and glory in the truth he bestows upon us.  They are our instruction manual for life.

So today, I thank my Heavenly Father for providing me with scripture so I can learn heavenly truths.

What are you thankful for today?

  1. For years I tried all kinds of fancy “devotional” books trying to find something for my kids. It took me a long time to realize all I had to do was open God’s Word. We’ve missed many evenings over the past year but we are reading our way through the Bible as a family. I’m so thankful we are!

  2. Gods word is a blessing!

    Thanks for sharing :)

  3. Thank you so much for this post!!!! We are going to begin family Bible reading this weekend and I was wondering how we were going to do with Scott being gone so much but you have just shared a wonderful, practical way for him to participate while he gone.

  4. My husband and I read together each evening, although we do miss a day now and again. I am currently reading through the New Testament in my morning reading and constantly reminded that the early Christians couldn’t just flip open their Bibles to one of Paul’s letters or one of the Gospels to clarify a question. I am thankful we have easy access to God’s Word!

  5. That is wonderful! I love reading the Bible with my family.

  6. My daughter and I were just talking about this the other day. We’re spoiled to have multiple Bibles in our home while others don’t even have one. We don’t want to take our Bibles for granted, so we need to make sure that we’re reading them daily.

I think it’s wonderful that you’re able to read the scriptures together as a family even when your husband is traveling.

  7. I love that no matter what my “need” is, I can find scripture to advise me.

  8. Amen! My children are fascinated when we read from the Bible, or do our Bible studies. I love that! :)

  9. What a fabulous thing to be grateful for…
