Traditions

By Brenda Emmett

This post is part of the new Men’s Monday Meme that was begun by my friend Tim.  The rules state that the post must be from a man’s point of view and in his own words.  So I had my husband, Gary Emmett write a contribution for this week’s meme

A Tradition to pass on…

If there is one Christmas tradition that I enjoyed as a child and want to pass on to my son, is that of making Christmas Treats and sharing them with friends and family.

Food, especially the sweet kind, tends to be standard to share during the Holidays and with my family it is no different. Mix it up and share different kinds each year.

One of my favorite is that of making Popcorn Balls and flavored popcorn too. Popcorn balls were shared with our family over fifty years ago and has been a part of it ever since. Traditional colors of red and green would be made and shared. Now we add flavors of cinnamon, cherry, banana, chocolate mint, pina colada, and many, many more.

Carmel, toffee, and chocolate covered pretzels are usually added. One can’t forget to add peanut brittle and fudge. Divinity is always a favorite. If you like fruitcake, and there are some of you out there that does, especially the homemade kind, you can share that too. And of course don’t forget your cereal mixes: Chex Mix and Dog Food. However, you might want to call it something different that Dog Food.

A simple holiday plate, with a bow on top will suffice for delivery.

Every year it doesn’t have to be the same type of sweets that are given, but it does have the same effect: happiness for both the receiver and the giver.

Thanks for sharing Gary. I enjoyed it. I can relate especially to the Chex Mix part. It was a tradition for my brother and me to make Chex Mix every year during the holidays. After we moved away from each other, he kept up the tradition of sending gallon bags of mix to us every year until he passed away a couple of years ago. I’ve tried to keep it going, now, with my own boys. Which reminds me, I need to go to the store and buy the ingrediants!

Thanks for joining the first ever Men’s Monday Meme. You can claim the title of being the very first post. You’ll now go down in history :-) !
